You've all seen this bird before, I'm pretty sure! A real classic that I'm shaking out of my sleeve for you today!
Charles and Ray Eames enriched the collage in their Eames House with numerous objects and accessories that they brought back from their travels. For over fifty years, a bird figurine made of black wood has stood on the floor in the center of the living room - obviously a piece of American folk art that Charles and Ray particularly appreciated and which they often used as an accessory in their photos. The bird originally comes from the Appalachian mountain region in the north-east of the USA. Based on the original and in collaboration with the Eames family, 'Vitra' produced the figure in series.
Vitra has now given the popular design object a careful update. In addition to the previous versions in black and walnut, there is now a new version in light ash - with a reduced expression, subtle appearance and new lightness. The surface treatment has also been revised: The lacquer finish is water-based, while the oiled versions in cotton white and dark walnut allow the wood structure to stand out much more. This gives the House Bird a noticeably softer, more natural, higher quality look - and at the same time less plasticized. The walnut version is now also made from European wood.
