"IN-EI" - Japanese for "shadow, shadiness, nuance". The art of light has a conceptual and technological heritage at the Miyake Design Studio that dates back to 2010, when Issey Miyake and his research and development team, the Reality Lab, presented 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE, a new process developed by Jun Mitani using a mathematical program with 3D geometric principles. 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE is an extremely ingenious method of producing clothing and a process that is another example of the possibilities of developing innovative textile technologies.

The project emerged from the intersection of creativity and mathematics, resulting in garments that can be folded flat and unfolded into three-dimensional shapes from a single piece of fabric. As the Reality Lab. explored the potential of 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE beyond fashion, a natural extension of the process was the development of lighting. IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE was born out of a collaboration with Artemide, who combined their lighting expertise with the Lab's innovative approach to materials and design. The IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE lighting collection was developed and produced in collaboration with Artemide. It includes floor, table and pendant lamps.

Each lampshade is created according to 2D or 3D mathematical principles in which light and shadow alternate harmoniously. Miyake's unique folding technique creates both sculptural forms and high stability.

The structure of the recycled material, together with an additional surface treatment, allows the shades to retain their shape perfectly without an internal frame and to be reshaped when needed. They can also be easily stored flat when not in use.
