A slender metal rod flares out at one end to form the heat sink and the housing for the LED, which is enclosed in a UV-bonded methacrylic cover. This cover ensures that the light source remains invisible and the luminaire looks like a floating crescent of light.
The industrial design team at Foster + Partners experimented with different materials, surfaces and optics to achieve the desired lighting effect and volume.
